I was approached by a mutual friend of a friend about designing a logo for their budding streaming career. We bonded over our shared love of Overwatch (particularly Lucio, the support character) and I got to work on a few ideas. After a few rounds of changes and new ideas we arrived at what we have here: an exciting mix of chaotic street art with a modern, polished, and gridded feel. We decided on some colors and from there I came up with some graphics for their various pages and I honestly love how it turned out. It was a great project and I had a lot of fun working on it!
So hey, if you have an eSports brand in need of an exciting new aesthetic then I’m your guy!
I’ve always loved swords. It’s a thing. So when the chance to brand a sword fighting gym popped up I absolutely pounced on it! Bridge City Blades is a “European Martial Arts Studio” located in Portland, OR. It’s a brand new business and they needed a nice visual identity and after several back-and-forth emails with the client we were off to the races! He wanted something geometric that reflected the history of Portland, hence the “Bridge City” part. I did some research on the city and came across a few really interesting bridges - mainly Steel Bridge, Hawthorne Bridge, and Fremont Bridge. The shape of these bridges immediately made me think of the crossguard on a sword and, after some sketching and experimenting, I settled on using Fremont Bridge as a reference due to it’s curves that allowed me to use it playfully with the sunset. Then the rose pommel came about as a reference to one of Portland’s other nicknames - Rose City - and the colors were chosen based on Portland’s flag. The client was onboard and from there I just went nuts making tons of variations and options (I’m partial to the tertiary logo myself!).
Overall this was one of the best experiences I’ve had working on a new brand. The client was communicative and involved i the creative process in a good way and we came up with a good mark and a good, if not simple brand system. Not to mention a ton of logo options we ended up not using… but hey, maybe they’ll show back up on a t-shirt or two! Who knows?
A coworker commissioned from me to make a logo as a gag gift for an inside joke he has with his friends. He ended up printing this on some cards and using them as Christmas gifts. I’m not sure of the details but I had a great time with this one and I think it turned out really cool. I know it’s just a joke but I feel like this brand deserves to become a real thing!
One of my responsibilities at Crosstown Concourse is to occasionally provide some services to our tenants, when needed. So when a new grocer and deli was moving into the building I was pretty excited to take a stab at helping them out with some branding issues they were having. They had gone through a designer they found online and it didn’t work out exactly how they wanted so I offered to help polish up the brand. The business is called “The Mad Grocer & Deli” and they wanted to invoke that Willy Wonka aesthetic (think Johnny Depp in any of his Tim Burton roles - particularly his turn as the Mad Hatter). So I took that and rolled with it! I took a lot of inspiration from cartoons from my childhood like Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, Adventure Time, and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and mixed in a little bit of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy to give it that sinister edge.
Oh, and did I mention I had about 48 hours to do all of this? Yeah, I cranked this one out super fast and honestly, I am incredibly proud of it. Sadly, they decided to go in a different direction but I still got a great project out of it and learned a lot about making chaotic, hand-drawn, custom typography that feels chaotic while still being balanced and appealing. I can’t wait to bring what I learned here into the next project!
Endless Bummer Records is a really special indie label based out of Boston, MA. In the late 2000s and early 2010s they were putting out some really cool projects from bands all over the country (and some international acts too!). So when they reached out about wanting to refresh their logo system a bit I was overjoyed to work with them. We decided to take their existing mark, an infinity symbol with sad faces in it and extrapolate from there. I was given a lot of freedom here and I think it came out really fun. We turned up the grim aesthetic while keeping it very lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek and I think it has a lot of personality.
From there we made some variants for their Endless Bummer Productions and Endless Bummer Radio offshoots ad the rest is history!
Shoutout to Jim, Josh, and Joel!
Easily the most straightforward brand I’ve ever worked on. The client wanted to make a real estate company with a slightly more futuristic and edgy feel (hence all the Xs) and I did just that. The whole process was in and out in no time without and ounce of friction. It was great! You love to see it.
